چکیده

Results of a systematic study of fully integrated particle multi-plicities in central Au–Au and Pb–Pb collisions at beam momenta of 1.7A GeV, 11.6A GeV (Au–Au) and 158A GeV (Pb–Pb) using a statistical-thermal model are presented. The close similarity of the colliding systems makes it possible to study heavy ion collisions under definite initial conditions over a range of centre-of-mass energies covering more than one order of magnitude. We conclude that a thermal model description of particle multiplicities, with additional strangeness suppression, is possible for each energy. The degree of chemical equilibrium of strange particles and the relative production of strange quarks with respect to u and d quarks are higher than in e + e − , pp and p¯ p collisions at comparable and even at lower energies. The average energy per hadron in the comoving frame is always close to 1 GeV per hadron despite the fact that the energy varies more than 10-fold.

Review of Monte Carlo methods for particle multiplicity evaluation

I present a brief review of the existing models for particle multiplicity evaluation in heavy ion collisions which are at our disposal in the form of Monte Carlo simulators. Models are classified according to the physical mechanisms with which they try to describe the different stages of a high-energy collision between heavy nuclei. A comparison of predictions, as available at the beginning of ...

Particle multiplicities in nuclear collisions at the LHC from saturation physics

The inclusion of running coupling effects in the BK-JIMWLK evolution equations considerably reduces the energy dependence of the saturation scale with respect to previous estimates based on fits to HERA data. We discuss how such slowdown affects the expectations for particle multiplicities in Pb-Pb collisions at LHC energies. Our prediction is based on the use of kt-factorization and on the use...

Bose-Einstein or HBT correlations in high energy reactions

Concepts of thermalization and hydrodynamical behavior are applied from time to time to e+ e , hadron+hadron and heavy ion collisions. These applications are scrutinized paying attention to particle multiplicities, spectra, and Bose-Einstein correlations in particular. Can hydrodynamics describe these data?
